Trick or Treat There Is No Treat Only a Trick
Halloween is upon us. The spirits of the departed return to haunt the living
and demons roam the land. Predictably, scary movies flood television
screens and before the COVI 19 movie theaters. In many places’ children
will still be wandering the streets trick or treating.
As believers, we are called to take the light into the darkness, not run away from it. “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it” (John 1:5, NLT).
Thought the word of God does not mention trick or treating directly. The
bible does clearly speak to us about the evils of this world.
“And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather
reprove them. Ephesians 5:11
When we teach our children Trick or Treating, or we not doing the very
thing the scriptures warns us not to do? “no fellowship with the unfruitful
works of darkness”
What possesses people to help their children become ghouls, monsters and
supernatural villains for one evening? It may seem harmless, but we are
really telling our children the world, Gods word does not apply on this night.
Why do we seek out experiences that we know will expose us to dread,
disgust and terror?
Do you participate in this celebration? Is it right or wrong? The Scripture
says, Jesus is our source of hope and has overcome death. (Romans 6:9) He
is our source of power and the light of this world. (John 8:12) With Him
there is no darkness. (John 12:46) He is the only one that can deliver us
from evil. (Galatians 1:4, Psalm 97:10, Colossians 1:13)
“Abstain from every form of evil. 1 Thessalonians 5:22”
As you think about Halloween this season, its origins and what it stands for would it be best to spend time dwelling upon its themes or to shed light upon what lies below the surface of this holiday’s celebration? God is calling humanity to follow Him and to “come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, and I will receive you” (2 Corinthians 6:17).
Teaching our children, the truth about Jesus Christ, the son of the Living God, is necessary and vital if we want them to develop a Christian worldview and stand firm in their Christian faith from generation to
generation. When allowing children to participate in activities, ask this question, is this an activity that promotes Jesus Christ and will it contribute to the Christian worldview you wish to implement into the training of yourchild. How can this activity benefit your child and promote and teach them the Christian faith?
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. 2 Tim 1:7”
So, the question is should Christians celebrate Halloween? As a godly thinking person, consider for a moment what you are celebrating and what Halloween stands for. Philippians 4:8 says, “Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, pure, lovely, and are of good report, if there is any virtue and anything praiseworthy, meditate on these things.” Is the holiday uplifting, pure, lovely, praiseworthy, or of good report?
No, it’s not! It is not based on godly themes such as the idea of peace, freedom, and salvation in Jesus Christ. It does recall feelings of fear, oppression and bondage. The Bible does not sanction witchcraft, witches, and sorcery. It is clear these practices are an abomination to the Lord.
“Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons, 1Timothy 4:1”
Leviticus 20:27 says anyone who practiced witchcraft, and sorcery should be killed. Deuteronomy 18:9-13 also speaks about witchcraft, medium, or a spiritualist, or calls up the dead. These things are an abomination to the Lord. Also, in Ephesians 5:11, as Christians we are called NOT to have fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them. We should have no association with any kind of darkness.
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:2
2 Corinthians 6: 17 says “come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord.”
The decision is yours…Trick or Treat, is it right or wrong?
