“Then David took his shepherd’s staff, selected five smooth stones from the brook, and put them in the pocket of his shepherd’s pack. Then, with his sling in his hand, he approached Goliath.” 1 Samuel 17:40
The story of David and Goliath is one of the most familiar and inspiring accounts in Scripture. It reminds us that no obstacle is too great when God is on our side. David’s victory was not primarily the result of courage, skill, strategy, or self-confidence. His confidence rested in the power and faithfulness of the living God.
While the Israelite army focused on the size, strength, and experience of Goliath, David focused on the greatness of God. Everyone else saw an unbeatable warrior; David saw an enemy who had dared to defy the armies of the Lord.
We all encounter times when the odds appear to be against us. We face circumstances that seem overwhelming, problems that appear impossible to solve, and battles that seem too great to win. Like David standing before Goliath, we may feel small, unprepared, and outmatched.
The giants in our lives may not carry swords, spears, or shields. They may appear as unemployment, rejection, grief, abuse, addiction, depression, illness, financial hardship, or fear. They may confront us through bills we cannot pay, people we cannot please, habits we cannot overcome, painful memories we cannot forget, or a future we are afraid to face.
We recognize the voice of the giant. It is the discouraging thought that greets us in the morning and the anxious worry that follows us into the night. It declares that we are too weak, the battle is too difficult, and victory is impossible.
But David did not face Goliath in his own strength. He declared, “The battle is the Lord’s” (1 Samuel 17:47). His faith was not in the stone, the sling, or his ability. His faith was in the God who had delivered him before and would deliver him again.
The story of David and Goliath fills us with hope because it reveals that giants can be defeated. Through Jesus Christ, we have been given a victory greater than David’s—the victory of redemption, forgiveness, freedom, and eternal life.
Whatever giant stands before you today, do not measure it only by its size. Measure it against the greatness of your God. The giant may be strong, but God is stronger. The battle may be difficult, but the battle belongs to the Lord.
